"I think every abortion is a tragedy. Many of them leave permanent trauma on the woman," Kennedy acknowledged. "But I think, ultimately, I don't trust government to have jurisdiction over people's bodies."
Kennedy's belief in bodily autonomy extends to decisions regarding pregnancies at any stage of development. He argues that even in cases of "full term" pregnancies, the woman should have the ultimate say. "I think we need to trust the woman and I don't think that's a satisfactory outcome, because there's always gonna be instances where bad things happen," Kennedy asserted.
Steele challenged Kennedy's stance, pointing out that many believe the state has an interest in protecting fully-formed fetuses. However, Kennedy countered that such arguments are outweighed by his belief that the government should not interfere in personal medical decisions.
"I think we should do everything in our power to make sure that never happens and everything that we can do," Kennedy said, referring to late-term abortions. "But I think, ultimately, you know, nobody sets out to do that."
Kennedy also expressed skepticism about relying on states to determine abortion laws, arguing that it should be left to individual women. "We shouldn't have government involved. Even if it's full term," Kennedy asserted.
