Rob Lowe Remembers Wild Bus Ride with Michael J. Fox and Hollywood Elite, Gets Busted for Smoking Pot

Rob Lowe, the star of "The Outsiders," recently reminisced about a memorable bus ride with Michael J. Fox and other celebrities, where the two friends were busted by police for smoking pot in 1986.

Rob Lowe's journey down memory lane took a wild turn as he recalled a remarkable bus ride with Michael J. Fox and a star-studded cast, which ended in an encounter with the authorities.

"We got pulled over...it was like a clown car," Lowe shared on Ted Danson's "Where Everybody Knows Your Name" podcast, as he recounted the incident that included Whoopi Goldberg, Cher, Judd Nelson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Robert Downey Jr., Jane Fonda, and Danny Glover.

The former Brat Pack member's tale emerged after he recently opened up about his sobriety journey, which began over three decades ago. Lowe acknowledged that his path to sobriety was gradual.

Reflecting on the night that marked a turning point in his life, Lowe recalled receiving a message from his mother about his grandfather's heart attack. However, his intoxicated state prevented him from responding, which he later deemed as his "final wake-up call."

"I remember like it was yesterday: My mom telling me [on the answering machine] to, 'Pick up, pick up,' because my grandpa had had a heart attack," he told People magazine. "I couldn't deal with it in the state I was in, and I needed to go to sleep to wake up so I could deal with it."

Upon reaching his bedroom, he began consuming tequila. Lowe admitted to keeping a bottle of alcohol by his bedside table, highlighting the severity of his addiction.

"Who doesn’t keep a bottle of Cuervo Gold by their bedside table? That was the final wake-up call. I’ve been sober ever since."

Lowe, now 60, sought professional help later that year, in 1990. "Getting sober was an incremental decision. It's baby steps until you're ready. You can't do it until you’re really ready," he confessed.

Interestingly, Lowe credited the 1975 movie "Shampoo," about a womanizing hairdresser, as a "baby step" toward his eventual sobriety. "It affected me tremendously and [was] the first glimmer of your conscience, your destiny, God, going, 'Psst, pay attention to this,'" Lowe said.

Lowe's story serves as a reminder of the challenges and triumphs associated with overcoming addiction. His journey underscores the significance of seeking help and taking gradual steps towards a healthier life.
