In the midst of today's divisive culture wars, I find myself reflecting on the formative influence of my childhood teacher, Joe Stokes. As a Black boy raised by a single mother in the predominantly White town of Muncie, Indiana, I was fortunate to have Mr. Stokes as my guide during my formative years.

I remember the first time I entered his classroom at Washington Carver Elementary School. His vibrant red hair stood out against a sea of blondes and brunettes. I had never seen anyone with such a fiery hue before. Little did I know the profound impact he would have on my life.
Initially, I noticed his athleticism. He excelled at dodgeball and enthusiastically joined us in basketball games. But it was during the camping trips that he truly captured our imaginations. Mr. Stokes would fearlessly consume fried worms and lead us on "Snipe Hunts," a classic fake camping game where we searched for a mythical creature.

Beyond his playful demeanor, Mr. Stokes possessed an unwavering commitment to our growth. He taught us the power of perseverance, urging us to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. He instilled in us the importance of integrity, emphasizing honesty, respect, and unwavering loyalty to our principles.
As a teacher, Mr. Stokes recognized the transformative potential of education. He taught us that learning was a lifelong journey that extended beyond the classroom walls. He encouraged us to be curious, to ask questions, and to constantly seek knowledge.
We formed a deep human connection that transcended race. It was through this bond that Mr. Stokes was able to impart invaluable life lessons that have shaped me to this day.

Mr. Stokes's influence extended beyond my childhood. I followed him to Ball State University, where our bond deepened further. He has been one of the most profound mentors outside of my family, guiding me through the complexities of life.
Our relationship transcended the racial divide that often permeated society. It was a human connection, a shared understanding of the importance of education, perseverance, integrity, community, and lifelong learning. It is because of this connection that I am where I am today. And it is why I fight to restore the spirit of individuality in today's America.
