Russia Accused of Attempted Electoral Interference in 2024 US Election

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has indicted a pair of Russian state media employees for allegedly funding a US-based media company in a bid to spread propaganda during the 2024 presidential election.

The DOJ's indictment alleges that Kostiantyn Kalashnikov and Elena Afanasyeva, employees of RT (formerly Russia Today), provided nearly $10 million in funding through shell companies to a Tennessee-based media company known as Tenet Media.

Tenet Media allegedly published nearly 2,000 videos on social media platforms like YouTube and TikTok, featuring paid conservative influencers who discussed topics such as immigration and inflation.

The videos are said to have aligned with Russian government interests in amplifying US domestic divisions and weakening opposition to its actions, including the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The indictment identifies several prominent conservative commentators employed by Tenet Media, including Benny Johnson, Dave Rubin, and Tim Pool, who have denied any knowledge of the alleged scheme.

Johnson called the allegations "disturbing" and stated that his lawyers would pursue legal action against anyone who suggests his involvement.

Rubin denied any wrongdoing, claiming he was unaware of the alleged fraud. Pool also maintained his innocence, stating that he and others were "deceived and are victims" if the allegations are true.

Attorney General Merrick Garland vowed that the DOJ will aggressively combat foreign interference in US elections.

"We will be aggressive in countering and disrupting attempts by the Russian government, or any other malign actor, to interfere in our elections and undermine our democracy," Garland said.

The Justice Department previously designated RT as a foreign agent in 2017.

In response to the allegations, RT issued a sarcastic statement, dismissing the accusations as "clichés" and claiming that "Secretary Clinton is sad that it's not because of her."

The indictment underscores growing concerns about foreign interference in US elections and the use of social media to spread propaganda and influence public opinion.

The DOJ's actions demonstrate a commitment to holding accountable those who attempt to undermine American democracy and protect the integrity of electoral processes.
