Heithaus, a professor at Florida International University, noted that shark attacks are incredibly infrequent, particularly considering the millions of people who visit Florida's beaches each year. According to data from the Florida Museum of Natural History's International Shark Attack File, there have been an average of eight unprovoked shark attacks per year in Florida over the past decade.

"Shark attacks are extremely rare events," Heithaus said. "To put it into perspective, there are over 20,000 hospitalizations in Florida each year due to bicycle accidents, while shark attacks number in the single digits."
Heithaus explained that several factors influence shark behavior and potential interactions with humans, including environmental conditions such as water temperature and clarity, the presence of prey, and human activity in the water.

"Sharks are apex predators that primarily feed on fish," Heithaus said. "When there are large concentrations of baitfish in an area, sharks may be attracted to the feeding frenzy."
Human activity can also play a role in shark encounters. Activities like surfing, spearfishing, and swimming in areas with known shark populations can increase the likelihood of an interaction.

"It's important to be aware of your surroundings and take precautions when swimming in known shark habitats," Heithaus said. "Avoid swimming at dawn or dusk, when sharks are most active, and refrain from entering the water if there is a lot of baitfish present."
Despite the rarity of shark attacks, Heithaus emphasized the importance of public education and awareness. "Understanding shark behavior and taking appropriate precautions can help reduce the risk of negative interactions," he said.

He advised beachgoers to swim in designated areas with lifeguards and heed any warnings posted by authorities. Additionally, swimmers should avoid wearing shiny jewelry or clothing that could attract sharks.
"While shark attacks are understandably concerning, it's crucial to remember that they are extremely rare," Heithaus concluded. "By taking common-sense precautions, we can enjoy Florida's beautiful beaches safely and minimize the chances of an encounter with a shark."
