In a harrowing incident that tested the limits of human resilience, a skier experienced a terrifying fall while attempting to descend South Arapaho Peak in Colorado. Miraculously, the skier survived the 1,000-foot plunge, thanks to the swift intervention of two off-duty snow patrol members who witnessed the accident.
On Sunday, June 16th, the Boulder County Sheriff's Office received a call about a skier who had sustained serious injuries on the Skywalker Couloir, a notoriously challenging slope on the west side of the peak. Andrew Hildner, Public Information Officer for the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group (RMRG), acknowledged the severity of the situation given the location and the extent of the fall.

Two off-duty snow patrol members, present in the area at the time, played a pivotal role in the rescue efforts. They immediately called 911 and began descending towards the injured skier, who had slid and tumbled approximately 1,000 to 2,000 feet before coming to rest on a rock ledge.
The Skywalker Couloir, described as "advanced terrain," posed a significant challenge for rescuers. Emilie Jue, an RMRG technical field team leader, highlighted the complexity of the rescue operation, emphasizing the late season conditions and the skier's location beyond the double black diamond difficulty level.

The rescue mission, which spanned over 10 hours, involved multiple agencies. RMRG medical personnel were flown in by helicopter and provided additional medical care to the injured skier. Rescuers utilized a full body vacuum splint for the skier's transportation.
The skier was airlifted by helicopter to a local high school and then transported to a hospital by ambulance. Despite sustaining serious injuries, the skier remained stable throughout the incident.
