Turner, now 28, found out she was pregnant with her first child while on a retreat in Bali. She admitted that she didn't immediately tell Jonas after finding out, but eventually shared the news with him upon her return. "I remember throwing the pregnancy test at him, saying, ‘What do you think we should do? Do you think we should have it?’" Turner recalled in an interview with British Vogue.
Turner gave birth to her first child with Jonas in 2020, amid the coronavirus pandemic. She spent 10 months bonding with her daughter, Willa, before welcoming their second daughter, Delphine, in 2022.
In September 2023, Jonas filed for divorce in a Florida court, citing "irreconcilable differences." Turner later sued Jonas in a New York court over the custody of their two children. She claimed she learned of the divorce filing "through the media" and accused Jonas of "the wrongful retention" of their daughters for multiple days.
Melcher, a prominent divorce attorney, explains that custody battles can be particularly challenging when the parents are high-profile celebrities. "In these cases, there's often a lot of public scrutiny and media attention, which can make it difficult for the parents to reach an agreement," he says.
Melcher adds that the best interests of the children should always be the primary consideration in custody disputes. "The court will look at a variety of factors, such as the parents' parenting abilities, the children's relationship with each parent, and the children's overall well-being," he explains.
Turner has spoken out about the challenges she faced during the divorce proceedings, including being portrayed as a bad mother in the tabloids. "I remember I was on set, I was contracted to be on set for another two weeks, so I couldn’t leave. My kids were in the States and I couldn’t get to them because I had to finish ‘Joan.’ And all these articles started coming out. It hurt because I really do completely torture myself over every move I make as a mother — mum guilt is so real!" she told British Vogue.
Despite the challenges, Turner remains committed to co-parenting with Jonas and ensuring the well-being of their children. "I’m unhappy with the way everything played out, especially when it comes to my children," she said. "They’re the victims in all of this. But I think we’re doing the best we can. I’m confident that we can figure it out. Joe is a great father to our children and that’s all that I can ask for."
