Soto's Savage At-Bats Help Yankees Secure Sweep and Maintain Winning Streak

SAN FRANCISCO -- Juan Soto took three steps and stared toward the visiting dugout at Oracle Park, taking in his Yankees teammates as they erupted in jubilation.

His three-run double had just capped a four-run sixth inning, breaking open a 1-1 tie and sending the Yankees to a 5-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Thursday afternoon.

The win completed a four-game sweep of the Giants, the Yankees' first sweep of a four-game series in San Francisco since 2011. It also extended the Yankees' winning streak to seven games, their best start to a season since 2019.

Soto's double was one of several "savage at-bats" for the Yankees on Thursday, manager Aaron Boone said.

"We just kept putting together good at-bats," Boone said. "Even when we weren't getting hits, we were making (pitcher Logan) Webb work and running up his pitch count."

Webb, one of the top pitchers in the National League last season, entered the game with a 1.80 ERA in four starts this year. But the Yankees knocked him out of the game after just 83 pitches, scoring five runs on seven hits.

"They're a tough lineup to get through," Webb said. "They're all good hitters, and they don't strike out much. They make you work for everything."

Giancarlo Stanton led off the sixth inning with a single, and Anthony Rizzo followed with a walk. Matt Carpenter then lined a single to right field, scoring Stanton and advancing Rizzo to third.

Soto then stepped to the plate and worked the count to 3-1. Webb threw a sinker on the outside corner, but Soto reached out and drilled it into the right-center field gap, scoring Rizzo and Carpenter.

"I was just trying to get a good pitch to hit," Soto said. "I got a sinker that I could handle, and I put a good swing on it."

The Yankees added another run in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by Oswaldo Cabrera, giving them a 5-1 lead.

The Giants scored a run in the eighth inning on a single by Mike Yastrzemski, but reliever Miguel Castro came in and retired the next three batters to end the threat.

Aroldis Chapman pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his second save of the season.

The Yankees have now won seven of their first 10 games this season, and they are off to their best start since 2019. They will return home to face the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night.

Soto has been a key part of the Yankees' early success this season. He is hitting .350 with a 1.150 OPS, and he leads the team with 12 RBIs.

Soto's ability to hit for power and get on base has been a major boost to the Yankees' lineup. He has also been a good defender in right field.

"He's a special player," Boone said. "He's already one of the best players in the game, and he's still just 24 years old."

Soto is just one part of a deep and talented Yankees lineup that also includes Stanton, Rizzo, Carpenter, and Aaron Judge.

The Yankees are hoping that this lineup can lead them to their first World Series title since 2009.
