Sutton surrendered to police on March 31 after authorities responded to a call about domestic violence involving Sutton and a female around 5 a.m. on March 7. Sutton was initially charged with a third-degree felony that could have resulted in a prison term of up to five years.

However, after Sutton entered a pretrial diversion program in April, the charges were reduced from a felony to misdemeanor battery. Sutton's agreement with prosecutors required him to undergo a mental health evaluation.

Sutton had a career-high 65 tackles and an interception in 2023, and signed a one-year deal with the Steelers during the offseason after the Lions released him following the alleged incident.

Sutton declined to comment on the specific details of his arrest or potential punishment leading to his suspension.

"Adversity strikes everyone in life," Sutton said upon signing with the Steelers. "It's about how you handle it and go through those phases, knowing who you are individually and not letting anyone dim your light."

Sutton will be eligible for reinstatement on October 29.

In addition to the NFL's suspension, Sutton is also facing a civil lawsuit filed by his ex-girlfriend, who alleges that he physically abused her on multiple occasions.

Sutton has denied the allegations and has filed a counterclaim, accusing his ex-girlfriend of defamation.

The Steelers have not commented on Sutton's suspension or the civil lawsuit.

Sutton will miss the Steelers' first eight games of the season, starting with their season opener against the New York Giants on September 11.

The Steelers are expected to rely on Karl Joseph, Miles Killebrew, and Tre Norwood to fill the void left by Sutton in their secondary.
