Tampa Business Owner Stays Put Amid Hurricane Milton: "Protecting Our Property

While Hurricane Milton threatens the western coast of Florida, Tampa business owner Rick Mijares remains in the city, ready to assist his community as a first responder if the need arises.

Tampa, Florida – As Hurricane Milton approaches the western coast of Florida as a dangerous Category 4 storm, Rick Mijares, a local business owner, has opted to stay in Tampa rather than evacuate. Mijares intends to serve as a "first responder" for his home, business, and community in case of an emergency.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers sent a message to Florida residents, urging them to "Stay safe, Florida" amidst Hurricane Milton's threat. The team has relocated its operations to New Orleans in preparation for their matchup against the Saints on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Tropicana Field, home to the Tampa Bay Rays, has been transformed into a base camp for Florida emergency officials. Governor Ron DeSantis has recalled crews dispatched to North Carolina to aid in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, directing them to return to Florida and prepare for Milton's arrival.

Evacuation orders have been issued for most of Florida's western coast as Milton churns in the Gulf of Mexico. Many of the affected areas are still recovering from the devastation wrought by Hurricane Helene.

"Time is running out," Governor DeSantis emphasized on Tuesday. "Use today as your day to finalize and execute the plan that is going to protect you and your family."

According to Fox Weather, Hurricane Milton is expected to bring a deadly storm surge, destructive winds, and flooding rain. Forecasters warn of a possible 10- to 15-foot storm surge in Tampa Bay, the highest ever predicted for that location. This has prompted evacuation orders for coastal communities.

Despite the impending threat, Mijares remains determined to stay in Tampa and protect his property and community. "We're not going to let a hurricane scare us out of our home," he said. "We're here to protect our property and help our neighbors if they need us."

Mijares has prepared his home for the storm, installing hurricane shutters and securing loose objects. He has also stocked up on food, water, and other essential supplies.

"We're not taking any chances," Mijares said. "We're ready for whatever Milton throws at us."

As the storm approaches, Mijares encourages other residents to heed evacuation orders if possible. However, he understands that some people, like him, may have to stay behind.

"If you're staying, be prepared," Mijares advised. "Stock up on supplies, secure your home, and have a plan in place in case of an emergency."
