MSNBC host Alex Witt has sparked debate about the potential for the Trump campaign to tone down its rhetoric after a shooting incident occurred outside former President Trump's golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida. Following the initial reports of shots fired, Witt questioned whether Trump's campaign would urge its supporters to curb inciting violence.

"Do you expect there to be calls from within the Trump campaign to do that?" Witt inquired. "We do not know the source of any gunshots or gunshots... We do not know who is responsible for this. The whole thing has yet to be 100% confirmed from start to finish how this all played out."

MSNBC political analyst Elise Jordan expressed skepticism about the possibility of sustained unity and calls for toning down rhetoric. She recalled the aftermath of the assassination attempt on Trump in 2022, noting that while there were initial discussions of a less combative tone, the atmosphere quickly reverted to its previous intensity.

Jordan emphasized the need for both sides of the political spectrum to work together in reducing tension. "I would love for us to have a unity-type moment, but I think it is probably going to be fleeting, as we have seen in the past," she said.

She also questioned the extent to which politicians have contributed to the escalation of violence. "How have we gotten to this point when the demonization of the other side... it is no longer politics. It has gotten bigger than that, the calls for violence, the violent rhetoric and look at what happens. This heated rhetoric can only go so far before, unfortunately, it has led to violence on both sides of the aisle," said Jordan.

Fox News Digital reached out to MSNBC for comment but did not receive a response.

Initial reports indicated that the shooting involved a dispute between two individuals and that Trump was not the intended target. However, the FBI has since classified the incident as an assassination attempt against the former president.

The suspect, identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, allegedly approached the golf club armed with a rifle. He attempted to enter the property but was fired upon by Secret Service agents. He fled the scene but was later apprehended by authorities.

Routh was carrying two backpacks and a GoPro camera. The rifle used in the incident was recovered from bushes outside the golf course.

This incident marks the second potential assassination attempt against Trump within the last few months. In June 2022, an individual fired shots near a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The shooting has raised concerns about the potential for further violence in the political arena. Many are closely monitoring the response of the Trump campaign and other political organizations to see if they will address the need for more restrained political discourse.
