Trump on Second Assassination Attempt: 'I'm Doing Fine,' But More Security Needed

Former President Donald Trump told Fox News host Sean Hannity that his security detail had "long requested" more manpower, and that the failure to provide adequate security was a "weakness" in the efforts to keep him safe.

Former President Donald Trump has addressed the second apparent assassination attempt on his life, saying he is "doing fine" but emphasizing the need for more security personnel. In an exclusive interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Trump spoke about the July and September incidents and the security concerns surrounding them.

"We have long requested more people, more men and women, but more people. And because, you know, we have rallies [of] 50-60,000 [people]," Trump said. "In New Jersey, we had 107,000 people show up. There's never been anything like it. And we have long requested more people. That's true. That's the weakness. If there's a weakness, I really think that's the weakness."

Trump pointed to the large crowds at his rallies as a reason for the need for increased security. He stressed that the additional personnel would help ensure his safety and that of the attending crowds.

"We have tremendous rallies and crowds, and that's a good thing, but you need more protection. And we've long requested more people," he said.

The Secret Service has acknowledged Trump's security concerns. Acting Director Ronald Rowe, Jr. announced that the agency had moved to increase assets and enhance security for the 2024 GOP nominee following the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July.

The latest attempt on Trump's life occurred on September 16, as he played golf in West Palm Beach, Florida. According to the Secret Service, a suspect, identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and having a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

Routh was spotted by a Secret Service advance agent with a rifle near the golf course. A shot was fired, causing Routh to flee. He was apprehended by local law enforcement about 45 minutes later.

Trump praised the actions of the Secret Service during the incident. "Frankly, I think the Secret Service did a great job, and they got me out of there quickly," he said.

However, Trump emphasized that the need for more security personnel remains. He said that he wanted to focus on the business of running the country and that he believed that adequate security was essential for him to do so effectively.

The assassination attempts on Trump have raised concerns about the safety of political figures in the United States. Bipartisan legislation has been introduced in Congress that would extend Secret Service protection to former presidents and vice presidents.

The Secret Service continues to investigate the September assassination attempt, and the case is ongoing.
