Sources close to the campaign have confirmed that documents have been requested from numerous prospective contenders for the 2024 GOP vice presidential nomination.
Among the names prominently featured on the vetting list are North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, and Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio. These three individuals have consistently emerged as potential running mates in various discussions and speculation.
However, sources close to the campaign and the former president emphasize that the list extends beyond these three names. Other individuals reportedly being vetted include Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas, Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, Representative Byron Donalds of Florida, Representative Elise Stefanik of New York, and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who served as Housing and Urban Development Secretary during the Trump administration.
When questioned about the campaign's outreach regarding vetting, Representative Byron Donalds declined to comment, stating, "I'm not going to comment on that. I'm going to leave that one alone."
Highly placed sources within the campaign indicate that the list of potential running mates will continue to be refined and narrowed down. However, the process remains fluid, and changes may occur.
In terms of timing, sources suggest that Trump is unlikely to announce his choice of running mate until shortly before or even during the convention, which is scheduled to begin on July 15 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This aligns with earlier statements made by Trump, who has indicated that he may announce his running mate "in Milwaukee."
When asked about the vetting process reported by Fox News and other media outlets, Trump campaign senior adviser Brian Hughes stated, "Anyone claiming to know who or when President Trump will choose his VP is lying, unless the person is named Donald J. Trump."
