Vikings Tight End Hockenson Begins Camp on PUP List, Recovery on Track

Minnesota Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson has been placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list as expected for the start of training camp, with his recovery from a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee ongoing.

Minnesota Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson began training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list as anticipated due to his ongoing recovery from a torn ACL and MCL. Despite the designation, Hockenson's rehab progress has been ahead of schedule, according to head coach Kevin O'Connell.

Hockenson is among the 38 players, primarily rookies, quarterbacks, and individuals rehabilitating injuries, who reported to camp on Sunday. The remainder of the roster is set to arrive on Tuesday, with the first practice scheduled for Wednesday.

O'Connell expressed optimism about Hockenson's recovery, noting that he had only missed a few days of the offseason training program to visit his surgeon in Los Angeles. The sixth-year tight end will continue to gradually increase his activity during camp, with his 2023 debut likely postponed until after the season opener on September 8th.

To ensure a full recovery from his MCL injury, Hockenson underwent ACL reconstruction surgery on January 29th. While this delayed his recovery timeline, it is expected to improve his overall prognosis for the season.

"When he's ready to go, we want to make sure that everything is done the right way for T.J.," said O'Connell. "He is such a significant part of our organization moving forward."

Hockenson, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, had a career-high 960 receiving yards in 15 games last season. He suffered the knee injury in the December 24th game against Detroit.

Cornerback NaJee Thompson (knee) and running back DeWayne McBride will also be sidelined for the start of camp. McBride has received a non-football injury designation, but the Vikings have not disclosed the nature of his condition.

The Vikings are confident that Hockenson will make a full recovery and return to his Pro Bowl form in the upcoming season. His presence will be crucial for the team's offense, which is expected to be led by quarterback Kirk Cousins and a talented group of receivers that includes Justin Jefferson, K.J. Osborn, and Ihmir Smith-Marsette.
