Country music star Walker Hayes has been vocal about his struggles with alcoholism and his subsequent journey to sobriety. Now, he's using his platform to inspire others who may be grappling with similar challenges.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Hayes revealed that he celebrated his eighth year of sobriety in October. To mark the occasion, he released an EP titled "Sober Thoughts," which details his experiences with addiction and recovery.

Hayes acknowledges that the country music scene can be associated with promoting drinking culture, but he emphasizes that there's another option: "I am in an industry that can often condone that lifestyle. It's about drinking. And so I'm not trying to combat it or battle it or rid country music of that, but I also want to show people and just normal guys like me that there is an alternative."

To that end, Hayes often incorporates his personal experiences into his music. "I'm always writing about recovery once a week," he says. "I mean, there's always one song out of five each week that touches on my story or someone else's."

Hayes's commitment to sobriety is not limited to his music. He has also forged partnerships with companies that share his goal of promoting alternative options to alcohol. Last month, he collaborated with Athletic Brewing Company to release a nonalcoholic American pale ale called "Fancy Like."

Reflecting on his journey to sobriety, Hayes admits that he initially placed blame on others for his problems. However, it was when he turned inward that he began to make progress. "I think my worst enemy — along the whole road — was sadly myself," he says. "But I did a great job pointing some fingers."

Hayes credits his family for their unwavering support during his struggles. Married to his high school sweetheart Laney since 2004, Hayes has six children who provide him with constant inspiration.

Despite the challenges he has faced, Hayes remains optimistic about the future. "I do know that that was an overcorrection from some things growing up," he says. "But I think I would tell my younger self to chill out a little bit and just focus on the things that I think the world sees me now trying to focus on."

Hayes's message is one of hope and resilience. He wants others to know that they are not alone and that it is possible to overcome addiction. "I would easily continue [working with JCPenney] in a heartbeat," he says. "It's been a blast. I can't wait to see it on people. You know, out in the world."
