"Wheel of Fortune" contestant Tavaris Williams expresses gratitude for Pat Sajak's composure and kindness after a surprising puzzle answer.
Emotions ran high as "Wheel of Fortune" approached the end of Pat Sajak's reign as host. Sajak, in his final episode taped in April and aired Friday evening, delivered an emotional farewell speech, bidding farewell to the millions of viewers who had welcomed him into their homes for decades.
"Well, the time has come to say goodbye," Sajak began. "I have a few thanks and acknowledgments before I go, and I want to start with all watching out there. It's been an incredible privilege to be invited into millions of homes night after night, year after year, decade after decade."
Sajak expressed his belief that with this privilege came a responsibility to maintain the show as a safe and enjoyable space for family entertainment. "No social issues, no politics, nothing embarrassing I hope, just a game," he said.
However, Sajak noted that over time, the show evolved into more than just a game. "It became a place where kids learned their letters, where people from other countries honed their English skills, where families came together along with friends and neighbors, and entire generations," he said.
"What an honor to play even a small part in all of that," Sajak concluded. "Thank you for allowing me into your lives."
Co-host Vanna White also bid an emotional farewell to Sajak in a tear-jerking video aired during Thursday's episode. "I can't believe that tomorrow is our last show together," White said. "I don't know how to put into words what these past 41 years have meant to me, but I'm going to try."
White expressed her gratitude for Sajak's support and mentorship throughout her time on the show. "You made me so comfortable and so confident, Pat. You made me who I am, you really did," she said.
She also shared cherished memories of their time together outside of the studio, including watching their children grow up, traveling the world, and sharing countless meals and experiences. "What an incredible and unforgettable journey we've had," White said.
"As this chapter of our lives is coming to an end, I know you'll still be close by," White concluded. "You're like a brother to me, and I consider you a true lifelong friend who I will always adore. I love you, Pat."
Sajak's retirement marks the end of an era for "Wheel of Fortune." However, Ryan Seacrest has been announced as the new host, promising a smooth transition for the beloved game show.
