WNBA Commissioner Rejects Notion of Caitlin Clark Facing Jealousy or Targeting

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert dismisses claims that rookie phenom Caitlin Clark is facing jealousy or targeting from fellow players, attributing the perceived scrutiny to her high-profile status.

The intense scrutiny surrounding Caitlin Clark, the NCAA's all-time leading scorer, has sparked ongoing discussions about potential jealousy or even targeting from her peers in the WNBA. However, Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has firmly rejected such notions, citing the naturally competitive nature of the league and the spotlight that comes with being a rising star.

In an interview with "The TODAY Show," Engelbert emphasized that the high level of competition in the WNBA is simply a reflection of the immense talent assembled in the league. With only 12 WNBA teams compared to over 200 NCAA Division I women's college programs, the concentration of elite players inevitably leads to intense rivalries and physical play.

"What people don't realize [is] in college, there's over 200 NCAA Division I women's college programs. There's 12 WNBA teams; so you take the talent, and it's centralized with the best, the biggest, most physical, and, really, the best players in the world. So, I think there's always an adjustment for all rookies," Engelbert explained.

Engelbert went on to highlight the exceptional performance of Clark and the entire rookie class, including her recognition as the WNBA Rookie of the Month for May. She also pointed out that Clark's popularity and the increased viewership her games attract do not diminish the achievements of other players.

"There is a spotlight," she added. "No league is ever about one player. You see players, there's injuries, other things that happen. We're marketing around all of our players, but I think Caitlin's lifting everybody."

The commissioner's comments resonate with the sentiments expressed by several WNBA players who have publicly praised Clark's talent and competitiveness. Candace Parker, the two-time MVP, has repeatedly stated that Clark's success is a testament to her hard work and dedication.

While acknowledging that all rookies face challenges in transitioning to the WNBA, Engelbert dismissed the idea that Clark is being singled out for unfair treatment. Instead, she attributed the perceived scrutiny to the intense media coverage and fan interest surrounding her unprecedented accomplishments.

"I think our rookie class this year is doing outstanding, including Caitlin. She was the rookie of the month for May," Engelbert said. "I think there's always an adjustment for all rookies."

Clark's rising popularity has sparked discussions about race influencing her popularity, as well as instances of opponents seemingly celebrating her struggles. However, Engelbert refrained from speculating on the motives behind such actions.

"I think that the conversation about the racial aspect is, again, a point of discussion for folks, and I'll let folks have their discussions about race. I will say that Caitlin has played in a number of basketball leagues, and she's been well-respected everywhere," Engelbert said.

Ultimately, Engelbert emphasized that the focus should be on the collective success of the WNBA and the continued growth of the league. She expressed confidence in Clark's ability to handle the challenges that come with her newfound fame and contribute to the league's continued prosperity.
