Yankees and Mets Announcers Engage in Playful Banter Amidst Crosstown Rivalry

The Yankees and Mets, eternal crosstown rivals, have taken their feud to the broadcast booths, with announcers from both sides trading playful jabs and defending their respective teams.

The long-standing rivalry between the New York Yankees and New York Mets has taken an amusing turn, with announcers from both sides engaging in a lighthearted war of words.

It all began when Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay expressed his displeasure over an advertisement for the Mets booth, which declared itself the "best booth in baseball." Kay, who hosts his own radio show on ESPN New York, accused the upper management of "cluelessness" for airing the ad on his program. Kay also took the opportunity to defend his YES Network partners, stating that he would choose them over any other broadcast team.

During a rain delay in the second game of the Subway Series, the Mets announcers on SNY couldn't resist the opportunity to retaliate. Play-by-play announcer Gary Cohen revealed that he had recently met the Yankees' new "very talented young broadcaster," Emmanuel Berbari, who has been sharing duties with Justin Shackil on WFAN since John Sterling's retirement.

This prompted analyst Ron Darling, a former Met, to ask, "How does he feel about our show?" reigniting the friendly rivalry.

Cohen responded with a diplomatic "Uhhh I don’t think he really had any opinion," but analyst Keith Hernandez, another former Met, couldn't resist a jab. "I heard it was the best rain in Major League Baseball," Hernandez quipped, referring to Kay's social media post during the delay, where he joked about the "best rain" in baseball.

Cohen, sensing that the banter was escalating, attempted to defuse the situation by saying, "I think it’s time to play some baseball," but Hernandez quipped, "Had to go there."

Despite the playful jabs, it's important to note that Cohen and Kay are longtime friends in the industry, and their comments are likely meant in good humor. Kay himself has stated that he would squash any beef if necessary.

The Mets ultimately swept the two-game series with a dominant 12-2 victory on Wednesday, extending their impressive winning streak. Their 17-6 record in June is the best in the majors this month, while the Yankees have lost nine of their last 12 games.
